Vulnerability as a carer

I am very fortunate to have a good constitution; 63 years old & not taking any prescribed meds. Caring for my hubby full time who isn’t very mobile & has breathing difficulties etc.

But a few incidents lately have got me thinking - what if I am ill and unable to walk/get out of bed to care for my hubby or go to the GP surgery for treatment or to hand in a sample etc? My hubby’s balance is very poor & he relies on his walking stick and me to navigate outside, so I can’t expect him to pick up a prescription for me etc. His essential tremor makes doing simple daily things around the home very difficult or impossible for him.

Our friends live either overseas or 2-3 hrs drive away. Our locally living friend recently had to move away due to family issues. No neighbours as friends, just casual acquaintances. We moved to this area 1 1/2 yrs ago & I’m shielding my hubby, so I don’t mix socially.

I am realising how vulnerable we are and that adds yet another dimension of concern to my role as a carer.

Does anyone know what happens when a carer is too ill to function? I am guessing there is no safety net.

Ask your local social services for a Carers Assessment, to include a plan for emergencies.

Ask for an updated Needs Assessment, Carers Assessment and Emergency Plan. Do you both have emergency Lifeline pendants?
