Uniersal credit and change of circumstances

Hi there i am new to the site , recently i have registered as a unpaid carer as my husband is ill , he has been awarded LWRCA , PIP he is applying for soon , however as we both on UC , and from researching i know i can not get carers allowance till he gets PIP , do i inform UC that i am a unpaid carer ? As it does say that i should inform them if i am caring for some one or does that apply to people getting carers allowance ? Thank you in advance x

Hi @Hpotter, I would suggest that you let dwp know that you are a carer as they might decide to do the paperwork early.

Hi there thank you replying , sorry i forgot to mention he has the PIP form , he is meeting some one at CAB , who is helping him with the form i just didnt want to inform UC of being a unpaid carer when i shouldn’t be ! And knowing our luck it might mess up our current claim or my husbands LWRCA

Hi @Hpotter - If you need any further guidance on this, I would recommend emailing advice@carersuk.org as we have some experienced advisers who can help, especially on finance-related matters related to caring. I’m so sorry to hear your husband is unwell - wishing you both all the best with your claim. I hope this is helpful.

I have arthritis in my hands, so can’t write much. I asked DWP to send a Visiting Officer to help me. He was brilliant, asked all the right questions, and within a couple of weeks the PIP form (for my son) was completed, and accepted by DWP. Every week of delay is a loss of money, so one way or the other get the form in asap. They will tell you if they need further information.

Hi , after some more advice i informed UC , as apparently i might be put under another agreement, as i look after him for more than 35 hours however i am not banking on anything changing , i am now waiting to see what happens if the worst happens and there sanction me or anything i am seeing CA , about a radar key for my husband and ask for guidance on putting a complaint in but it reassuring there is help out there and thank you for your help.

@Hpotter Hpotter you can purchase a radar key from this website:

As the key is for personal use by a disabled person - pick the VAT free option.
