Can anyone advise on how I could get a home visit for my aunt to have her ears syringed? She is profoundly deaf so a hearing aid is her only assistance to hearing sounds but when her ears are blocked the hearing aid is useless! SpecSavers do not offer home visits and I have no hope of getting through to her Dr’s surgery! Is it the role of the District Nurse? I cannot find a private company that covers our area (South East London) Can anyone advise please?
Hi @CityGirl, I would ask the GPS, to refer your aunt told district nurses who should be able to help.
Hello - I live in South East London and we are very blessed with excellent District Nurse (or Community Nurse) teams. The ones in Southwark and Lambeth are managed centrally from Guys but they are based in different neighbours. What you need to do however is get her GP to do a referral. I know it can be tricky to get through to the GP but persist - and say she is housebound and needs either a home visit OR the District Nurses.
Unfortunately the NHS has stopped funding wax removal in most areas now. In fact RNID are currently campaigning for reinstatement of services because as you say it is an absolute nightmare for anyone who uses hearing aids which become useless when the ears are blocked. I would suggest contacting your aunts local NHS hearing aid department (often known as audiology) and ask them what they advise. They don’t usually have any problem talking to relatives since large numbers of their patients can’t use the telephone themselves. If they can’t help themselves they will undoubtedly have been asked the question many times and be able to signpost to other private recommended providers.
You could also try the RNID helpline who must also be getting huge numbers of this type of enquiry too and might be able to signpost to local providers.
Thank you for all the advice. I may have found a couple of private companies who may provide a home service. If the cost is unaffordable I will try the GP/District nurses. Much appreciated.
I know our GP (South Glos) has a poster on the wall advertising a private provider for ear wax removal who states they will do home visits. That doesn’t help in London, but maybe GP Receptionist might have contacts if the ones you have found don’t turn out useful.
