Prove I'm a carer

Hi, My local leisure centre has asked me to prove I am my wife’s carer. How do I do this, as I receive too much state pension to claim carer allowance?

Is your wife in receipt of disability benefits? Does she have proof?
If yes, then she needs a carer, who she has as a carer is irrelevant!
Many places do not understand that not everyone who is caring for a disabled person is not entitled to Carers Allowance.
Can I suggest that you initially use this as a training opportunity for the manager?
Print off eligibility criteria and give him/her a copy.
If that doesn’t work, tell them that you are Disabled By Association and they are in breach of the Equality Act.
Give them 14 days to comply, or you will refer the matter to the Equality Commission!
I have been challenged a few times.
Do they have a formal carers policy?

Yes. Thank you for the info. “formal carers policy” I will ask.

hi, that’s ok but she does not want to be caring all her paper work around with all the time, but i do see your point. thanks Deedee

A disabled bus pass in our area looks like a credit card, issued by the council. No need to carry ANY paperwork!

How did you get on? Did they admit they were being too strict with their ‘policy’?

Best bet is a quick letter from your GP or your wife’s GP saying you’re her main carer. If she gets Attendance Allowance or PIP, you can show that too, and explain you support her daily. Some places even accept a simple signed note from you explaining the situation.
