Hi, I’ve seen that there have been a few threads about Disabled Facilities Grants, but I have a question that’s related to what kind of rights the carer has over adaptions that are offered.
This is probably going to sound really selfish of me, but my husband had an assessment last week & the council are suggesting a stair lift (which my husband really doesn’t want; he hates to admit that he needs one to get up stairs), various rails, a step outside, to make it easier to get into the house and to remove our bath & replace it with a level access shower. At the moment we don’t have a downstairs toilet at all, so they’ve offered him a commode regardless of, and noting, the fact that there’s nowhere to put it. None of this is in writing yet.
Today I received a Prevention Assistance grant consent form to sign, to consent to the works described, but the form is blank. They want me to sign a blank form. It looks like it’s not for a Disabled Facilities Grant, although that was what I phoned about last May.
I’m very sad because I like to take a bath, but it would appear that I don’t matter. Do I have any right to ask for a different solution? Do they have to consider me and my needs at all?
Yes! If husband can’t get in the bath, it’s easily solved with an Archimedes bath seat, or similar. NEVER sign a blank form. You need a downstairs loo - did they consider who is going to empty the commode, and where???
Have you contacted our Helpline for advice, I would suggest you ring them or send them an email, they can be contacted on on 0808 808 7777 from Monday to Friday, 9am – 6pm or you can contact us by email (advice@carersuk.org)
I’m not sure if you are aware but we are currently running a series of online weekly meet ups for carers to get together and chat informally. People say they’ve found it really helpful and supportive and it’s nice to be able to take a little bit of time for yourself. There’s no pressure to share any more than you’re comfortable with. Join up details are here: https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advic … ne-meetups
We are also now running a weekly Share and Learn sessions, where we run a series of fun and relaxed online sessions where visiting speakers who share tips and skills on a range of topics - please have a look at the link and see if one grabs your attention. https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advic … e-sessions
I just wanted to let you know we are still running these Janine, if you would like to come along.
I just phoned and the guy I spoke to said he didn’t know of anything that would say that other household members/carers need to be taken into consideration.
Hi, I wrote a reply, but while I was on my phone & it doesn’t look like it came through. Apparently they had a meeting yesterday & basically what they’ve offered is all they offer, unless I want to put some money towards it.
