New to Caring Role

Hi. I care for mum who has recently been diagnosed with dementia. I’m finding it quite tough to navigate this journey whilst working full time. Anyone else in a similar position?

Hi @CraftyGill

You are certainly not alone on this forum, as I have found out. I joined a few weeks ago and have found the comments and advice really help.
I work part time, but it always seems to be during my working hours, I get all the phonecalls or stuff to sort.
I really do sympathise with you as working full time, it must drain a lot of your energy. Make sure you leave an hour or so for yourself each evening. I read a book and escape that way

Welcome to the forum. Does mum live with you?
Do you have Power of Attorney?
Is mum claiming Attendance Allowance and exemption from Council Tax?

Getting a Care Assessment for Adults and an Assessment for Carers from your local authority might be of help. All are legally entitled to have this carried out by their local authority.

So many on this forum who can offer great advice. I was very glad this site was recommended to me when my caring role for my dad increased due to his decline because of Dementia. He was diagnosed just over 3 years ago and he has slowly declined since then bless him.

Just remembered you are not alone and hope you find this forum a great help

Hi CraftyGill. Being carer is a tough journey. I’ve done it myself for my mother for over 30+yrs (I was a carer since I was 11yrs). Even though I’m currently unemployed, most days it can be hard to juggle things. If any part of your life gets stressful, try talking to your employer or social services. Hopefully, you’ll get the flexibility you need to get yourself sorted.
