I am a carer for a very unwell adult son of 45 years of age feeling very lonely and overwhelmed

I am a carer for a 45 year old beautiful son who has a severe mental illness and ADHD . I feel so lonely and overwhelmed . I worry about my son constantly as he has now been moved out of hospital after 28 years and now in support living for the last 12 months . I collect him one day a week . I am looking for other members who are in a similar position

Hi @user1 and welcome.

Among my caring duties I help to care for my 40 year old autistic son who is in supported living, and I’m of a similar age. My wife and I live in Leicester. The membership on here is very spread out!

I get the impression that you are hoping to meet up with other carers, and although CUK runs an online meetup, which you’re more than welcome to join ( Online meetups | Carers UK), CUK doesn’t have physical groups where you can meet up in a café or other local venue.

There are local groups all over the country, and it’s worth checking with your local council responsible for adult social care. They will be able to give you contact details for your local carer services, most of which will offer meet ups and other forms of support.

Obviously, we’re happy to chat with you here as well, and quite a few of us understand the difficulties of growing older and caring!

How long has your son been in supported living now? Ours moved into his 15 years ago now, and loves his life. We see him regularly still - in fact he’s coming round for dinner on Sunday - and we still worry about his future…

Most of us pop into “Roll Call” for a chat, and to keep up with each others’ news. It’s fairly busy, with about 1000 or so posts per month, so we set a new one up each month. You can find the current one here: Roll Call January 2026 - Social area / Members’ corner - Carers Connect - The Carers UK online community - please do pop in for a chat!
