I’ve been made the defacto carer for my mother as out of all my siblings I basically have no life, there’s a reason for that, I’ve been housebound for the past 15+ years with social anxiety and agoraphobia, I’ve become very unfit and ill, but now I’ve been forced to take on the role of carer for my mother who is permanently on an oxygen machine and can’t do anything any more. I’m completely overwhelmed, I’m left fatigued, depressed and completely trapped as she needs all day and night care but I’m barely able to take care of my self, my health is worsening and I’m struggling, surely this isn’t normal that there’s no professional aftercare from her being in hospital twice and being put on oxygen for the rest of her life. It’s like they said, ok, she’s all yours, not our problem any more, good bye and good luck. I don’t know what to do.
That’s a catastrophic failure of hospital procedures!
Tell the GP involved that he needs to apply for Fast Track NHS Continuing Healthcare for mum.
Then it’s up to you whether mum has carers coming into your home or mum moves to a nursing home.You cannot be forced to care. Did anyone even ask you?
Does mum own or rent her home? This is a really important question.
Do you have any idea of mum’s financial situation?
She is a pensioner on state pension, doesn’t own her home.
In that case, there is a housing rule you need to be aware of. If the original tenants were mum and dad, and dad has left or passed away, when mum dies or moves into residential care the council or housing association may give you 4 weeks notice. As soon as possible you need to find out if there is any leniency for you as you have been caring for mum. there have been some people on the forum who have ended up homeless. If mum has under £23,000 in savings then Social Services may subsidise any care she needs, or arrange NHS Continuing Healthcare.
I’m on the local housing register but I’m apparently not eligible for anything, won’t let me “Bid” on anything at all… depressing as I see new builds going up all around us, not saying I want a new builds, but I would need a ground floor domicile due to poor health and mobility constraints
In that case I suggest you talk to Shelter asap to find out your rights, as you are disabled. There may be a different set of rules. Not an area I’ve been personally involved with.
