Change in circumstances

I’ve trawled DWP web and can find nothing (shock, horror) to answer this - and I bet some here can in seconds.

How far back can I tell the Powers That Be regarding a change in circumstance? I started earning a little bit of cash every week, but didn’t tell them. How far back can I say "Oh, by the way - I’m getting paid £50 a month for helping out a mate? He’s paying me from his small business, but it’s about time that I tell them I am, before someone notices it on his tax return and that I’ve said nothing! Is it a week, and month or just a day!

Thanks in advance
