Back dated carers allowance help

Afternoon all… I’m after some advice. Has anyone had their careers allowance back dated more than 3 months? In 2023 I had to stop work because my disabled daughter (10) became increasingly unwell and would not sleep. I was claiming universal credit and wrongly assumed that Carers allowance was part of that. Basically I haven’t claimed for 16 months. My husband and I are in a lot of debt and if they backdated it fully it would literally change our lives. Anyone had any experience with this. Thanks x

Hello,
I’m really sorry to hear about the challenges you’ve been facing. It sounds like a very tough situation. Regarding Carer’s Allowance, it is generally backdated up to three months from the date of your claim. However, there are some exceptions where it can be backdated further, especially if the person you care for has recently been awarded a qualifying benefit.
In your case, since you were already claiming Universal Credit, it might be worth contacting the Carer’s Allowance Unit directly to explain your situation and see if they can make an exception or provide additional guidance. You can also seek advice from organizations like Citizens Advice or Scope, which have experience dealing with such cases.
