Backdating carers allowance

I never thought I was entitled to carers allowance because my father did not have any of the qualifying conditions. Then I came across some paperwork of his that showed he has been paid Attendance Allowance for a number of years. So I go to the Carers Allowance website and it said you can claim back 3 months, but also seemed to suggest you might be able to claim back further.

So, does anyone know what the truth is about this? Is 3 months a hard limit or can you claim back further? Looks like I might have missed out on years of benefits.

Hello,
It sounds like you’re in a tricky situation. Generally, Carer’s Allowance can be backdated up to 3 months from the date of your claim. However, there are some circumstances where you might be able to claim back further.
For instance, if the person you’re caring for has recently been awarded a qualifying benefit, you can try to claim Carer’s Allowance within 3 months of their award. This means your Carer’s Allowance can be backdated to when they started their claim for the qualifying benefit, even if that was more than 3 months ago.
It might be helpful to contact the Carer’s Allowance Unit directly or seek advice from organizations like Citizens Advice to get specific guidance based on your situation.
I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
Best Regards

Thanks for the reply. I am now receiving the allowance, but they would only go back the 3 months.
