What’s happens to unpaid Carers and Care Package

Hi I need some advice. I am a carer for my mum and she is currently in hospital due to a fall. She went in hospital day after Boxing Day and dad was admitted to hospital on 20th December as he had a heart attack and was there for 2 weeks. He came home today and now has a Care Package in place. I feel a bit put out now as I won’t need to make dad’s meals as it will be the carer that will be doing it. Am I still my mum’s carer when she comes out of hospital? What are unpaid carers rights?

Many thanks, Andrea.

You are still dad’s carer! Think of how long the paid carers are there. You are still watching over him for 22? Hours a day!
How long do you think mum will be in hospital?

Hi thanks for your reply. The home carers also tend to another elderly lady near us and they seem to stay for a short while. Not sure when mum will be out of hospital, hopefully soon.

Dad’s carers will be free for the first few weeks. Make sure you talk to the ward’s Discharge Nurse before mum is discharged, and that they talk to you about whether you are able and willing to care for both parents.

I think dad is possibly having the home carers long term as he had a heart attack. Yes I will ensure I speak with the discharge nurse before mum is allowed home. Many thanks x.

You need to check this. Care for the first 6 weeks is usually free, then charged for. Has anyone explained this? Consider asking your parents to arrange Power of Attorney asap.
