Hi there. Anyone know of a taxi service in Leicester that has a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. Since he broke his hip my dad is now totally immobile. He has an electric wheelchair but cannot get in or out of it without a rotunder. He certainly can’t get out of it to get into a car. So I have been trying to find a taxi service that has a WAV. I have been offered a minibus at an extortionate rate and told i can’t book it during school run periods and even if I do book it it may be needed for something else and the booking cancelled at short notice. So no good for hospital appointments (have to book an ambulance for him for those). His bus service is practically non existence so can’t use that. There is a charity bus that he uses but they only have specific destinations on only 2 specific days of the week.
I cannot believe that in this day and age with so many people in electric wheelchairs that I can’t get transport for him so I am reaching out to you lovely forum members to see if you can help.
Hi Helen, you can try ambulance transport for hostpial appointment. for GP and other things request a home visit and explain why. If you got facebook see if there is a local community group as there are people there who know people who can help . even ask the Gp surgery as they must know someone or try the social service as they should have a lisit. hope this helps.
Thanks. I do get him an ambulance for hospital visits although they are awful. They usually get him there too late for his appointment and last time they left him sitting in an empty waiting room alone for 3 hours before they came to take him home - the department was closed and everyone had gone home. Luckily I was with him that time
Thanks. Tried to find Driving Miss Daisy. A Leicester branch does come up but cannot seem to contact them. Tried to message their Facebook page but got no reply.
Try the ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ website main phone number for office hours contact and enquiries. They should be able to give you the local contact number or email address.
Thank you. Swift was the taxi firm i tried who told me only their minibus could take an electric wheelchair and I couldn’t have it during school run times.
Just googled “electric wheelchair taxi Leicester” and amongst the various hits I got was the following hit which, at first glance, looks as though might suit your needs
Strange - they used to have a lot. A friend of mine has an electric wheelchair and she used to use them a lot. Mind you, taxi firms have taken a hit from Uber and other competition more recently.
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately dad’s wheelchair is a Quantum Rehab Q6edge and when I googled it says that that model doesn’t fit in a black cab.
