Stairlift (rental of?) advice / experience

My mother now finds it quite difficult to climb stairs

the stairs are fairly straightforward

we saw the suggestion / idea of renting / leasing one

but the sooner the better really

does anyone have any insight into this?

links etc

I phoned up someone from a link on the internet today but the guy sounded as though he just happened to be in the office ?

He took some details, said he would get someone to phone back but it never happened

Appreciate any advice am in South Wales area

hi there @Hello_there , I would suggest speaking to social services as they could get one fitted if the OT comes out and does assesment. They will even take it out later on and it does save on cost. got one for my parents.

It’s more a question of quality of life really. I don’t want to mess about with waiting lists & committee meetings etc

As want it done quickly

But could give them a :bell: I suppose

What’s an OT by the way?

Hi - we had a stairlift installed when my Dad moved in with us and we rented one because some neighbours did that and said it was great as no capital outlay. I can’t recall the company we used as it was about six years ago now.

At the time we paid £70 a week, which seems steep but it included supply and installation and removal when it was no longer required. Also all maintenance including parts if there was an issue.

Dad was only with us a few months before he moved to a care home as he deteriorated very quickly (something I had seen coming but not with dementia setting in as well!).

Don’t know if these comments are any use. As @Michael_1910123 says - see if Social Services can help and don’t be afraid to lay it on thick how Mum really struggles re you are worried about falls etc! An Occupational Therapist will come out to assess the house as well as check on Mum’s needs - you may find they come up with all sorts of other things which may be of help as well !

Good luck and please let us know how you get on as I am sure up to date information will be of help to others too.

Generally aids are provided free.

My dad was given one free of charge by the local Council (in South Wales) but it took months (5 or 6 months if I remember correctly) for an OT to come and carry out a stairlift assessment first. I was warned there was a long waiting list. Maybe if you contact social services or get to an OT via a GP (which is what we did) and stress the urgency you could get a quicker response.

Hi, Steve here. I thought I might make a suggestion regarding stairlifts. There is Govt/council funding available for stairlifts. Go to the Gov.uk website and look for ‘disabled facilities grant’ and follow the link. Enter your postcode and take it from there. They send round a team of assesors and they are pretty good and can get things moving for you. Hope this helps.
