Self employed coronavirus grant

Hi I am a carer and currently earn under the allowed limit. If I receive the governments coronavirus grant how will this affect the Carers allowance? Thanks

I doubt that any of us can answer your question Justin !

I suggest that you contact the Carers UK Adviceline who might have the answer - you can phone or email them; the details are here
https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/talk-to-us

Also have a look at CUK’s factsheet on Caers Allowance here

Carer’s Allowance is not based on your income and capital (or any partner’s). However, there is a cap on how much you can > earn from work > and still be entitled to Carer’s Allowance.

Carer’s Allowance is taxable. However, carers will only have to pay tax if they have other sources of taxable income such as occupational or personal pensions or part-time earnings, and if this combined income takes them over the threshold for paying tax. Carer’s Allowance on its own is below this threshold.

I’m not sure how the grant would affect earnings so it’s probably best that you contact the Adviceline or DWP directly for guidance.

If you say you are currently under the earnings threshold. I would have thought if you are only to receive your normal weekly salary. It’s should be the same. Even if you only received 80% of your salary that would still be under the earning threshold.

Sorry to revive a six month old thread, but is there a definitive answer to the OP’s question, please?

I have had a Carer for little over a year now. In addition, she has been self-employed for nine years.

She is in receipt of Carer’s Allowance and Working Tax Credits, but no other benefits at all. She has savings, which I understand are above the limit for any UC.

This year, she claimed the two SEISS grants, and received them with no problems. Apparently, together they total approx. £3500. From what she has explained to me, up until two years ago her self-employed earnings were higher than they are now.

She has this query, which no definitive reply seems forthcoming:-

Although SEISS grants are not repayable, do they count towards earnings ‘from work’? She understands they are to be included on the 2020/2021 Tax Return and subject to tax, but for Carer’s Allowance purposes will they be ignored as they are Grants or viewed as Earnings, (albeit unearned?).

Her other question is this:- When self-employed, to qualify for Carer’s Allowance in the Tax Year commencing 6/4/2021, which previous Tax Years’ earnings will be taken into account, please?

Thanks in advance.
