Removal of Single Person Discount

Angela Rayner is considering removing single person discount on council tax. If you’re the only person living with a disabled member as there carer. They disregard Carer’s which then means they are a single person household.

This will be another big blow to them on top of the heating allowance. As the state pension already puts you over the threshold for claiming pension credit. Are they trying to kill of the vulnerable people off?

I never voted for Labour but there worse than the Conservatives as now. If it goes through we need to find an extra £800+ a year. Where do we find it? Do I give up caring and work then.

If this is true then it will be a double whammy for single pensioners who are above the threshold to claim pension credit - firstly losing the winter fuel allowance and then having to pay 100% council tax !

As I understand it council tax is set and controlled by each local authority with the money raised being used to pay for services within each borough ?

For a number of reasons, politics are generally avoided here. But just to be clear, the story is as follows:

Local councils are asking for the flexibility to choose for themselves who - if anyone - gets the single person discount on their Council Tax. She has not, quite rightly, responded to queries on this as it is something that - whether she agrees to do it or not - has to go through Parliament first, once a decision is reached. But let’s be clear that it’s the councils who are driving this, and the media are spinning for all they’re worth.

If anyone has concerns about this, they should contact their MP to make their views known.
