I’ve just joined tonight. My dad has Parkinson’s, I live with him and work full-time. He was diagnosed about 4 years ago and is for the most part, still very independent.
Recently, he has been much more emotionally abusive to me - I drive him everywhere, pick up medication, deal with phone calls (his voice can be poor at times and is self-conscious), but it is never enough.
I feel I am a very patient person, but there are times lately I feel like I could explode on him. It’s not a nice place to be.
Hi, welcome to the forum. I’m sorry that your dad is emotionally abusive to you. I don’t have any experience with this type of situation but hopefully this forum will be a good place for you to be able to say how you’re feeling. It certainly helped me when I was at my lowest.
Hey. Sorry unfortunately I am in no position to give advice I only joined tonight. My wife became disabled 7 years ago, originally I found it tough but just kept reminding myself what she must be going through. I learnt to except the new “normal” . However recently I find myself struggling, she has become increasingly aggressive and abusive, I have a grown up daughter who I was very close to and don’t see as much now. I miss her so much. All my hobbies have now diminished. I have probably painted a bleaker picture than what it actually is and I’m sure if I wrote this tomorrow it would probably have a different tone.
Not really looking for advice, I just needed to vent as I have no platform to do that.
Reading your message I would suggest that it’s time you had a break?
Have you and your wife been away together since she became ill?
Would you prefer to go alone?
My son, M, was brain damaged at birth.
For the first 16 years of my life I never had a child free day, and it ruined my health forever.
M now has a flat, and carer support, but I still do lots for him. For two weeks a year I escape to a singles hotel in Crete. I can cope with a lot during the year as long as I know I’ll be there in September. Only affordable due to my husband’s life insurance money though.
M and I have stayed in a rental property in Devon which has won awards for being disability friendly, complete with a rise/fall cooker hob. (Larkbeare Grange)
I’ve also stayed in a Hoseasons “lodge” at Hawkchurch Resort and Spa. Sounds very grand, but it just meant they had a bar, food, and pool. Hoseasons do lots of last minute special deals.
