New and a bit overwhelmed on the forum

Hello all

I am a carer for my child who is autistic with ADHD anxiety and depression and difficulty associated with hypermobility. I have ADHD myself and finding the site a bit overwhelming but thought i would say hello. If anyone has any tips on how best to navigate the site and connect with others with similar experiences please do post. My caring roles seem to be ever changing and i can see myself moving from primarily caring for my childs additional needs to now also needing to also manage increasing needs of my ageng mother and I get anxiety about the future. Somehow just typing this on a annonymous forum seems to feel theraputic.

Hi @YollyB ! Welcome to the forum!

Quite a few of us have experience of caring around ADHD and autism - my youngest son (admittedly he’s 41, which makes me very old…) has autism and is now in supported living, although we’re still involved with his care.

The forum is very busy, but most of the activity is on the “Roll Call.” It was given that name by one of the carers who first joined the forum back in the early 2000s, but it acts as a “chat over the garden wall”, and it can get a bit busy! You’re very welcome to join in there - you’ll find it here: https://forum.carersuk.org/t/roll-call-april-2026/128310

Your comments about caring for your mum in the future rang very loud bells for me. For a number of years I was caring for my mum who had dementia, and I also care for my wife and eldest son: I think Facebook would say “it’s complicated.”

Anyway - the best thing to do is take a look when you have some time - and that can’t be very often with what you’re dealing with - and just dip your toe in gradually. We’ll be here.

Welcome to the forum. I have a brain damaged son and mum was disabled for a long time.
Counselling helped me set my priorities. Mum had to come second, she had a good pension and lots of people to help. My son needed me to speak up for him and there were things only I could do. I told mum, she didn’t like it but had to agree it was right!
Is your son getting all the benefits he is entitled to? How does he manage at school?

Hi @YollyB welcome to the forum, I care for S he is in his 30s now and has autism, related learning disability and health needs.

How old is your child and do they attend school?

Becoming a sandwich carer and also having to support your Mum with increasing needs and your child as well is a lot of juggling.
