Does anyone have any advice for me about ligament damage?
Apparently mine, going up from the heel, is damaged in some way, MRI on Wednesday.
I’ve been told I need an “air boot” when standing, a tailor made insert for my shoe, and may need reconstructive surgery, followed by boots to give extra support, not shoes.
No thanks to the NHS for not diagnosing that either at the Urgent Treatment Centre or the GP practice. I had to pay privately.
To say I’m utterly fed up, probably won’t have my escape to Crete this year, and it will be my 11th operation, all overwhelming, gutting and I’m utterly utterly devastated.
Hopefully the MRI will show it’s not severed and will recover.
I ruptured my ACL in my knee - it was excruciating.
The swelling was so bad and A&E said couldn’t do anything until the swelling went down. I was fobbed off basically and told I had partly torn my ACL.
I was given physio and as a result missed the optimum window for surgery.
It was the physio who told me my ACL was dangling and not attached at one end. I strengthen the other ligaments and muscles around the joint and learnt how not to perform movements that were agonising.
Eesh @bowlingbun that is NOT the news you wanted, im so sorry.
I have always problems with spraining and straining my ankles and overstretching the ligaments, and subsequently both plantar fasciitis and baxters neuritis.
Hopefully the MRI will show things are not as bad as they first seemed and they will be able to give you some strengthening exercises to give more support.
I would also highly recommend going to see a podiatrist who specialises in assessing gait etc as they may be able to give you some more practical advice on how to live with this day to day and make it to Crete. When i was diagnosed with the Baxters Neuritis just under a year ago, the podiatrist prescribed me a particular type of heel insert to cushion the ligament and give it a chance to repair. I had instant relief and as time has gone on it has gotten better and better.
I have everything crossed that you get a similar result!
@bowlingbun i used a company called footmedic and i was really impressed with them. The initial appointment was pricey because i booked in with one if the senior partners who specialised in foot pain, but follow ups are reasonable. They didnt try to upsell, or sell me anything i didnt need which i really appreciated.
I know my dad also visited a podiatrist but he was charged a lot more for a similar service, and upsold.
Ive never seen a doctor privately but i would be wary about them trying to make the condition sound worse than it is to get you to spend more with them (me cynical? Never!)
Either way i really hope you get it sorted - foot pain is the WORST. For me its up there with tooth pain
I’ve made an appointment to see a podiatrist next Monday, earliest possible. I have used private consultants a few times. Mum left me some money after she died, as a thanks for everything I’d done over many years, so will use some of this. One advantage is that the person you see is one of the top consultants in the area. I had to use one when I was diagnosed with kidney cancer, the surgery waiting list was long and my tumour fast growing, and it used a large chunk of our savings. Well spent as that was 20 years ago. The consultant I saw on Monday immediately realised what had been missed by both the hospital and GP! MRI tomorrow. I’m currently waiting for a guided injection on my hands on the NHS. Waiting list 6 months!!
I’m sorry to hear about your ligament issue @bowlingbun
I did a quick search for you because a friend a while ago had regular physio and strengthened muscle to rehab the issue, but it wasn’t a big tear…I can’t remember who/where so here’s a few links - I’ve not used these folks but it may be worth calling some physios because I’m pretty sure there’s some exercises and tips they can give you depending on the grade of the tear/injury
Thanks.MRI booked for tomorrow morning. Inflatable foot support coming tomorrow, I’m seeing the consultant on June 1st to discuss the next steps. Holiday in Crete at the beginning of September, I don’t want to cancel, hoping I’ll be able to manage it, but maybe not as much walking as usual. My friend in Lincolnshire is also a carer, we just love chilling out together.
@bowlingbun …hopefully you can get things sorted so you’re more comfortable and don’t have to miss your holiday. Like you said even if you can’t do as much waking it would be good to get away and spend time with your friend. Fingers crossed for you.
@bowlingbun good luck for today I hope everything goes ok for you and that you are able to go on holiday. Even if it’s going on holiday just having a nice relaxing time in the sun. Take care.
Thanks. I had a rather sleepless night. Will report back later. Eldest son is on leave today so he’s taking me to Southampton, then on to Costco. I bought some crutches from our local disability shop, only £10, so I won’t need to put any weight at all on the foot. I had some crutches when I had my knee replacements, kept them for years, then gave the to New Forest for Ukraine after an appeal!
@bowlingbun , I too am gutted for you. I had something similar many years ago (in my youth). An air boot will help support it. It’ll lessen any damage until you get checked out again.
@Melly1 , I’ve had knee trouble for lots and lots of years. Mine happened when I got tackled in a PE lesson when playing football. It’s not been the same since. Sometimes it swells up making it difficult to walk and the pain most days can excruciating. Also difficult to bend, when it “locks” I’m in big trouble. All I do is “strap it up” (as mum said). Physio is a good way to recuperate. Gentle exercises as well.
I Hhad the MRI today. Excruciatingly painful with my painful ankle in something too small to be comfortable pushing hard on the painful ankle bone. I was told not to move for about 25 minutes. I was good and stayed still but nearly crying at the end. It was also freezing in the room. If I knew in advance I would have worn an extra layer. Feedback will be given. My son said I looked terrible when I went back to the car! Now I have to wait 12 days for the result.
@bowlingbun at least it done now and you are home. Not nice being more painful and cold would also make it more uncomfortable.i hope you are ok. 12 days I hope you get the results sooner.take care.
After a drink and biscuit. 2 paracetamol and rubbing in Ibuleve, I snuggled down in bed for an afternoon nap. Feeling much better now, thanks! I was very glad that my eldest son had taken me, rather than have to drive home myself. The first part of the drive home involves a really busy part of the M3 round Southampton, lots of HGV traffic going to the Docks.
@bowlingbun …Sorry to hear you’ve had such a traumatic day, glad you’re feeling better. It’s good you didn’t drive, I know exactly what you mean re the traffic around that area.
Thanks Sue. I don’t normally mind motorway driving, but I felt really rough. My eldest drives lorries regularly, so it doesn’t bother him at all.
Good to hear the funeral arrangements are finalised.
@bowlingbun i hope that today is ok for you and the pain is not to bad. And that you managed to sleep abit. Ibureve is brilliant a sister where my mum used to work told her about it .when I broke a bone in my foot ,pain killers did nothing but upset my tummy. She sent mum with a tub of that. Amazing all the pain went. I hope today is better day for you and I’m glad your son helps you.take care.
