Hi new to forum. My name is Paul

I am a carer for my 90 year old Father who has to use a mobility scooter or wheelchair and public transport to get around. But the fares are becoming harder for me to afford. Can I get freedom pass and where from, for aĺ transport.

@Paulcan hello welcome to the forum. I hope you are having a nice day.your dad doesn’t have to pay for local travel over state pension age.older people in England can get a free bus pass .passes are applied for through your local council website .free travel local buses generally between 9.30am to 11pm Monday to Friday. All day weekends /bank holiday (but check your local area times)

Use gov.uk tool to find your local council website to apply online .required evidence .proof of age passport /driving licence .proof of address utility bill ,or bank statement. Recent photo.

Take care.

@Paulcan while your asking for that .does your father get attendance allowance. You can put in for that for him look it up online and apply for it if he doesn’t. Also depending what illnesses he has he may get council tax reduction check that out to.

Are you in London, since you say “freedom pass”? The Freedom Pass is a London thing and so you should contact Transport for London. Freedom Pass - Transport for London “You can travel free on TfL services with your Older Person’s Freedom Pass anytime Monday to Friday, except between 04:30-09:00. You can travel free anytime at weekends and on bank holidays.”

However, there is a disabled person’s freedom pass - not sure exactly what it is called - and it has no time restrictions. So there I think you do have to contact your local council.

“You can get a Disabled Person’s Freedom Pass, if you have an eligible disability and live in London. Check if you’re eligible for a Disabled Person’s Freedom Pass.”

I am wondering whether you can yourself get some kind of concession to accompany your father. Perhaps someone else knows this.

If you aren’t in London, you should apply to your council.

@Paulcan i don’t know where you live. But if you dad has a disability and needs assistance and someone to travel with him .there is something called a companion pass which can be applied for . So if you dad is disabled he can apply for a disabled persons pass with a +1 companion entitlement often called a companion pass. For this you apply to your local council concessionary department to see if they offer this.as discretionary rules apply.

Actually dad should be paying your fare!

If dad needs you to travel with him, but cannot afford to pay your fare, that suggests that Social Services should update his Needs Assessment. This is clearly a care need for him. Also, have you had a Carer Assessment from Social Services recently. They look at the support you need in your caring role, and they may give you a budget for fares. Under some circumstances, Social Services can give dad Direct Payments to pay you for the support you give.
