Caring for husband in North London

Hi, I’m new here; I’d like to know if there are other members in my area, who’d be interested in meet-ups. I am full-time carer to my husband, who has stage 4 cancer. It hasn’t been too demanding up till now, but in recent weeks he has needed more attention, and needless to say the whole situation has become very stressful. I am finding it a strain. I don’t know any other carers. It appears my local Council (Haringey) no longer has a carers’ group. I am in my late 50s, and fortunate enough to have my daughter and her boyfriend also living at home, and my son when he’s home from uni. Thank you!

Hi Fiona … welcome to the canteen.

North London carer groups ?

( Me ? First 30 years of my life … sentence served in Souff Tott’nam … I escaped in '83 ! )

That other outfit … The Carers Trust … used to have a post code search on their site to locate locally run
centres … perhaps my age but … I could not locate it.

Short cut …Internet search … NORTH LONDON FAMILY CARER GROUPS … replace GROUPS with CENTRES … and try the second
one if the first does not identify any ( Best search with … MAPS … as opposed to an ordinary search ).

Enfield revealed :

Days of old … if on my old side of the manor … Seven Sisters / Bruce Grove / White Hart Lane … take the overhead.

( Brent … Willesden … too far to the west ? )

Long shot … hospitals … Edmonton / Archway / Holloway … any ancillary carer groups through them ?

Charities still on the high street … do they know of any … AGE UK seems the hot favourite … web site doesn’t like my old
N15 5ER post code … phone number for local outlets … 0800 169 2081.

Some centres … they come out to you … usually the independent ones … run by former and / or current carers … not a suit
to be seen , thanfully ? … they KNOW the difficulty facing far too many carers.

I hope the above assists ?

Your husband … has anyone mentioned CHC / NHS Continuing Healthcare ( Also FAST TRACK ) / NHS Nursing Funded Care ?

Main thread … sections colour coded to help naviagation … in a maze ?

All benefits / allowances out there currently being claimed ?

Online benefits calculator … idea for that financial m.o.t. :

Housing … any problems ?

Council tax … discount / disregard ?

Upto date NEEDS / CARERS assessments ?

If not , LA for those … I do know the waiting time is above average , even on an urgent basis !

Classic post code lottery for those … and it’s the London Borough of Haringey in the frame … good luck !

Power of Attorney / wills … any problems there ?

Quiet on the forum … others will be along to extend their welcomes.

Thank you Chris! I’ve only just seen this reply by chance as the site was telling me I had 0 notifications…? Yes I’m finding it a bit confusing, but will perhaps join other threads in due course. Here’s a bit more clarification of my situation:
-My husband is not elderly; he just turned 60;
-I am not in need of financial support;
-My primary need is to be able to discuss day-to-day aspects of being a carer with other carers. I have tried 1:1 counselling, but it doesn’t help. I can’t burden my friends constantly with these issues, as they are not in the same situation; they are of course caring and sympathetic, but I need others in the same boat. If I can’t find a physical group, maybe a virtual one on here would be the next best thing.
Thanks again, and I hope to find somebody!

Your welcome , Fiona.

In CarerLand , only a fellow carer will hear you scream ?

LB of Haringey … worth exploring :

Carer's Outreach and Local Support Groups | Haringey Council

( Tott’nam Town Hall . a Tuesday ? At least you’ll avoid the neanderthals heading down to the Lane … they play
on Wednesday nights ! )

( Winkfield Centre , Wood Green , a Wednesday … probably tea in a better polystyrene cup ? )

Virtual wise … the social area of this forum … not much else out there … unless you explore FaceAche / Facebook ?

Free free to bounce anything of us … quiet at times but … someone always tends to drop in.

Hi Fiona
A lot of us find that this forum is a good substitute for fave to face get togethers. It means we don’t have to leave our caree and we can have our bit of the conversation at a time to suit us, even if then next bit comes hours or days later

A lot of the local carer groups tend to focus on those looking after older people as that is the majority but in here we can cater for everyone.

Feel free to look around and add your post to whatever thread interests you, so start one up. In the past we’ve discussed things as varied as books we are reading and sheds we are building. :exclamation:
