Carers Week - today's theme is health

We’re trying to raise awareness within GP practices, pharmacies, and health services of carers’ needs. Find out why it’s a good idea to register as a carer at your local GP practice: Talking to your GP | Carers UK

I registered as a carer with my GP 20 years ago. Apparently I can’t be a carer now I’m diabetic. Let’s just say “this is under discussion”!

I am diabetic and no one has EVER mentioned not being a carer - how ridiculous!!! In fact I was told they would pay more attention to my diabetes as they needed to ensure I was fit enough to continue my caring role…

I went for my diabetic review last week. I explained to the nurse that if only I could sort out my son with learning difficulties care arrangements, my life would be transformed. I’d been in a lot of pain for a month, due to a painful ankle which was misdiagnosed 4 times. I was very stressed and very tired as I couldn’t sleep properly. I was stunned by her advice:-
“Forget all about your son and look after yourself from now on”.
When I protested at that comment, she kept on, so I left the consultation.
So much for support from my surgery!!!

I’d definitely challenge that. I’ve several health issues but still have to be a full time carer for my husband. I’m registered as his carer at my GP surgery and no one has ever said I can’t be.

22 years ago after major cancer surgery I was told never to care for anyone ever again. Yet mum’s doctor tried to bully me into caring for mum over Christmas despite the fact I was legally unable to drive and my brain damaged son was due home for Christmas! That’s how much they care about me!

@DUC Welcome aboard!

Worry not, the challenge is in!
