Being paid as a carer by my mum?

Hi,

I’m a full time carer for my mum who is 83 and has Alzheimer’s. She lives with me and I’ve had to give up work to look after her. Mum has a bit of savings and I’m wondering if I could effectively be Employed by her? I’m thinking the amount would be up to the current tax allowance (£12,570).
What are the issues I need to take care of? What are the pitfalls?
I understand the issues around ‘deprivation of assets’ but I wouldn’t have thought this would be considered a ‘deprivation of assets’? (she’s not buying me a new Tesla or a house extension’!!)
Thanks in advance
Paul

Is Mum getting direct payments?

Do you have POA?

Hi Paul

I suggest you ask for guidance on this via the Carers UK Helpline

Carers UK information and support
Our telephone Helpline is available on 0808 808 7777 from Monday to Friday, 9am – 6pm or you can contact us by email (advice@carersuk.org)

It is not only the issue of deprivation of assets it is also having the capacity to give permission for this.
Far better to get correct information from the helpline and a solicitor.

A simple question about a complicated issue!

Easiest dealt with step by step.

I’ll start by asking if you have Power of Attorney?
Does mum have “mental capacity”?
Does mum receive Attendance Allowance?
Are you claiming Carers Allowance?
Are you an only child?
