Share your experiences with other carers and ask questions on accessing benefits and managing your finances
My top tip to any new carer, relating to finances, is to investigate what help and support you, and your carer. are entitled to, as soon as possible. I once met a couple who had a son with Down’s Syndrome who had missed out on TWENTY YEARS worth of benefits, because everyone assumed that they knew all they needed to know. Desperately needed money had been lost forever. The medical profession and Social Services could and should be more proactive. I’d like to see everyone with suspected dementia have a proper diagnosis and then be given a copy of this and a leaflet about “what to do next”. Until then, be sure to ask for a benefits check, either via the Carers UK helpline, Citizens Advice, or similar.
