My mum doesn't speak English, how can i find help for as i can't do it in my own

Hi, I’m looking after my mum, who doesn’t leave her room and requires a lot of support. I would like to get some help for her but she doesn’t speak English and therefore will be uncomfortable with someone else besides me. Where can I get help?

hi @Sunny43 , what lanuage does your mum speak? I would suggest social service.

She speaks Russian language

ok, I would speak to social services and tell them that your mum speak russian and needs help when speaking to other people espcially if you are not there.

I believe Russian was widely spoken in Ukraine. I believe a lot of Ukrainian refugees are now settling here, so as long as mum isn’t very political, the chances may be good. Failure to provide mum with appropriate care because of the language she spoke would surely breach the Equality Act?

I guess SS could supply an interpreter? Must be very hard to be in a new Country and not able to speak the language. Do you think she might start learning English if she is well enough? I realise it wont be easy or quick. Very hard on you if you need to be there all of the time.

Hi @Sunny43
Here’s an organisation you may want to connect with - I’ve no direct experience so I can’t recommend them myself but perhaps they can help?

Or perhaps you can contact Russian orthodox churches or google russian speaking communities online to see if they can offer links/contacts to organisations that can help?

I always find that the local hospice or care charities locally have the best knowledge about care support locally. So even if your mum doesn’t need them now, perhaps you can call them and ask for their ideas/thoughts?

I hope that helps
best wishes
