Living with Mother…

Hi everyone and Happy New Year! I’m brand new to the group and have joined because I am primary (only) carer for my 82 year old mother. She has been living with myself and my wife for nearly 3 years now and I must say it hasn’t been easy. I’m just hoping to meet others in a similar situation, to hopefully get a little support and encouragement along the way. All the best!

Welcome, does mum have rooms exclusively hers, and you, yours?

Yes she has her own en-suite room. We share the living room and kitchen

Hi @PaulW

welcome to the forum.

living with an elderly caree means no travelling and being on-hand to help but no escape either …

Are you able to leave her for short periods?

Welcome to the forum, @PaulW. You will find it full of information and advice from loads of helpful folk and it can be a bit overwhelming. Take your time and have a good look around and, when you’re ready, jump in and post on the Roll Call or connect with others.

I’m caring for my husband who is 10 years my senior. He is 73. It isn’t easy. But I’m glad you are doing it for you mum.

This is a great, supportive group for carers. Be sure to let us know what you need and we might be able to steer you in the right direction.

All my best to you and your wife! You are AMAZING!

Yes, we are actually going away tomorrow for a few days for our wedding anniversary. We tend to go away for a few days every couple of months. No more longer holidays though. We recently decided to sell our beloved motorhome :disappointed_relieved:

That’s good that you are able to have couple time away together. I hope you have a fabulous time.

Does your Mum manage whilst you are away or does she need contingency carers?

A real shame about your motor-home.

At the moment she’s fine on her own fortunately. She also has some friends round the corner too. We also never go more than a couple of hours away so we can soon come home if we need to.

Hi Paul. I’ve been a live-in-carer for my mum for the past 5-6 years. I do get help from a brother and sister who live nearby and one sister who lives many miles away.

Hope you are able to have carers in help you and your wife with your mother.

Good luck.
