Holiday Assistance

Good day to you fellow carers.
I am seeking advice, I am due to go on holiday to Egypt with my sister in September of this year, whom I care for, in the past she has used her own manual wheelchair, but this time we are intending on take a mobility scooter. I am looking into hiring one for the holiday, but presently struggling to find a hire company who will hire for the scooter to go abroad!! She does have her own scooter that does come apart in 3 parts but when I asked the TUI Assistance Team they werent sure how I go about presenting this to the airline, ie do I tie the separated parts together and anchor them to the frame of the scooter, or do I get a particular cover, They did seem to advise that she could take her scooter but we would have to take it apart, but werent sure whether the battery stays in situ!!! All very confusing for me. Not sure if anyone on here is a seasoned traveller abroad and know of any advice/tips that they could provide, I would be most grateful. I look forward to hearing back from anyone. Kindest regards, Jayne

@Redhead…hi, one time when my husband and I went abroad we hired a mobility scooter for him in the country we went to. You should be able to arrange one locally abroad and they’ll deliver and collect from the hotel. Hope this helps.

Is your sister able to take a few steps?

@Redhead John Morris has a publication about Wheelchair travel - I just checked and he wrote about Egypt:

but it was published July 19 2017

Like @Sue24 a long time ago when I looked into a wheelchair or scooter abroad I was looking to hire at the destination

I’m going to check with a few folks I know and will get back to you if I have more info

Hi there @bowlingbun yes my sister has two crutches that she uses, but she can only walk a short distance and I wanted a travel scooter in order she has some independence even from me, as she feels so reliant on me and feels bad about that, not that that even bothers me but I want her to keep as much of her independence as possible,

@Redhead from what I have seen on TV taking your own brings risks of damages etc. You can get assistance from the airports, which I have found to be really good with their wheelchairs to the aircraft and at the other end too. Then hire a scooter while you are there for the independence you want.
This may be easier to organise and take the worry about damage to your own or hired scooter in the travel process.
Have a lovely time
