Carers allowance, self employed, no accountant?

Firstly I’m new here so apologies if this is in the wrong place or a repeat question.

I am self employed working from home and a full time carer, my daughter gets enhanced rate daily living PIP.

I’m looking to apply for carers allowance and have to send them my years record of income.

I only have a small and low income from self employment so have no accountant.

Do I just send them the records I keep for HMRC which just record cash in etc?
Will they accept non accountant records?

Thanks

Hi
Welcome to the forum.

That’s not something I know about.
Please phone the helpline in the morning to ask them for advice.
Carers allowance is taxable and you may or may not quality for your NI credits or part thereof.

Phone the carers helpline for advice.

Yes they will accept records not completed by an Accountant.

Send them what you send to HMRC.

I was self-employed for many years whilst claiming Carer’s Allowance. And used to send in my “Accounts” once a year.

There may be a form to complete which asks for more detail regarding some of the expenses but they didn’t always ask for that information. It was mainly to certify that all the expenses were 100% business related. If you have claimed for things like telephone expenses they wanted to know what proportion was private use.

When you complete your Self Assessment for HMRC you must include the Carer’s Allowance you have received in that tax year because it is taxable income.

Make sure that your profits are below the threshold for Carer’s Allowance. Currently in the 2022/23 tax year, if you earn £132 per week or more you will not be entitled to Carer’s Allowance. I believe it is averaged out for the year when you are self employed.

Thank you,

Did you just send them a 12 month profit loss statement? Or a more detailed document?

Thank you!

Good luck.

I just sent my latest 12 month profit and loss statement.

I think that the first time they asked a few questions, mainly involving private use of some of the expenses but nothing very involved.
