The Government’s call for evidence on Carer’s Allowance, launched last week, is a vital opportunity to push for much-needed reform and to make sure carers’ voices are heard.
We’d like to invite you to join our webinar on Tuesday 21 July, 4-5pm for carers interested in taking part.
The session will provide you with background information and a chance to ask questions to help you with your response. You’ll hear from Department for Work and Pensions representatives, who will introduce the call for evidence, before members of the Carers UK team take you through the questions and what to expect in more detail.
The current Carer’s Allowance system is outdated and fails to reflect the realities of caring today. Carers UK has long called for a review of Carer’s Allowance to ensure it works well at supporting unpaid carers.
The Government is inviting carers, people who are cared for, and carers’ organisations across the UK (recognising the differences in carers’ benefits in Scotland and Northern Ireland) to share their views and experiences to inform their plans to modernise Carer’s Allowance. This includes:
- looking at the earnings limit cliff edge (which currently means carers lose their full benefit as soon as they earn over a certain amount)
- making the benefit more predictable for carers with fluctuating incomes
- improving the interaction between Universal Credit and Carer’s Allowance
- looking at the 21-hour study rule, which currently prevents those studying from claiming the benefit
- asking carers to share any other views on Carer’s Allowance.
Carers UK would encourage as many carers as possible to respond and have their say, so that together we can push for meaningful changes to Carer’s Allowance.
