Being Aware of Scams & Typical/Classic examples

With so many services online these days, scams, it seems, are rife and anyone can be caught out, especially at this time of the year. We all know they come in a number of guises – see our online guide for tips and advice on how to protect friends and family as well as yourself. Keeping safe from scams | Carers UK

A few of the scams I’ve seen on email/message:

  • You have a DPD parcel/Royal mail parcel that needs your address and additional postage paid
  • You’ve won something ‘click on here’
  • Postcode lottery click here
  • RAC emergency kit - you’ve won click here

Don’t click on anything in the email
Check the Sender address

Block the sender

  • the issue recently is that the same kind of email gets sent from a different email sender each time…they go through new senders and I have to keep blocking. Some email systems allow you to block similar ‘subjects’

Strange, isn’t it, how a parcel carrier with an inadequately addressed parcel for you, knows your e-mail address! Or how you win all these competitions you have never entered!

A useful e-mail address is report@phishing.gov.uk. Forward the suspect e-mail to that address. It is a department of the police, which investigates scams and identifies the senders and blocks their activities. Serious offenders will be prosecuted.
