Advice

Hi my name is Dean I work full time and care for my mum in the evening, she has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimers any advice or support is much welcome.
Thanks Dean.

Hi Dean,

welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to read of your Mum’s diagnosis.

Learn as much about Alzheimers as you can, so you learn about strategies to help her during the early stages and so you can start planning for the future as her condition sadly worsens. Do you have POA for her? If you don’t make sure you sort this out ASAP - before she is deemed to no longer have capacity.

Power of Attorney is so important, this has to be top of the list, asap!
Then sort out Attendance Allowance. If you have POA already, then just send them a copy.
If not, sort out DWP Appointeeship, so you can manage her benefits for her, and claim Attendance Allowance on her behalf.
She may now be exempt from Council Tax as dementia counts as a severe mental impairment. Easy to claim, just ring the council for a form to complete. They will then contact mum’s doctor.
Does mum own or rent her home?
Do you live with mum, or have a home of your own?
How old is mum, how old are you?
Do you have any brothers or sisters?

I know these look like random questions, but the answers are important, to help us give appropriate advice.
