Advice for caring for a difficult parent please

Hello,
Do you have any advice please for encouraging an elderly parent to assist themselves / us with their care needs?

Due to a decline in physical and mental health our father has completely abadoned his hygiene and other basic essential needs, often refusing our assistance.

If you have any tips for encouraging a healthier day to day existence please kindly let me know! Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

This is a problem that crops up regularly on the forum. There can be various causes.
How old is dad? Does he show signs of dementia? What physical problems does he have?

Is his GP aware of the problem?
Are you getting aby help from Social Services?

Hi Elise

Welcome to the forum.

Regarding your fathers condition, as Bowlingbun said, refer back to the GP and your district nurse for assistance and medical review with him.

Hopefully they will have professional and medical guidance on how to handle the situation and a bit more tailor made knowing his condition .

Please keep checking back for any other helpful replies.

Also phone the Carers UK helpline for discussion and advice.

If you have not had a care needs assessment done for your father call Soc Svs to set it up and if you have had one done ask for a review if it has been over a year or if less and this is a significant change.

If you have not been on the Age UK and Alzheimers websites have a look in them as they will be helpful too.
