New to Caring and looking for tips and advice

Hi all,

I’m a 41 year old male soon to begin a career in caring with no formal training, working with people with autism and cerebral palsy. I’ll be shadowing the first few weeks. I’m a little daunted about the personal support aspect, and how stressful the days could be?

Any advice and tips on these aspects would be great! Thanks!

Hi @Jack335 , good luck in you job but this is for unpaid carers, not paid carers.

Hi @Jack335

As @Michael_1910123 explains this forum is for people who are caring for a family member or a friend. I suggest you ensure you have the relevant training from your agency and speak to your supervisor for advice.

My advice would be listen to the person you are caring for and get to know them as a person. Care for them as you would like to be cared for. Take advice from their family/friend carer(s) as they know them best.

My son was brain damaged at birth, he can’t read, write or do any maths but can drive a 10 ton 100 year old traction engine! Everyone with special needs is different. Of course you need to consider safety, but look at what the person is capable and enjoys doing too. The more you can share and enjoy together the better it will be for both of you.
