I'm Overwhelmed

Hi, I have lived at home with Mum all my life. I gave up full time employment to support her, 5 years ago. At that time she needed more emotional support than physical , and therefore I was able to work part time in a new job I love.
However, since November this has all changed, she is now totally dependent on me and carers who pop in 4 times a day to see to her toiletry needs. I/we cannot afford more care than we already get. I don’t want to give up my job, but may have to. Thought about a career break, but would that affect me getting financial help. Has anyone else had similar experience?

You don’t have to give up your job, it sounds as though she needs more care hours.
Can you tell us what is the matter with her, and how old she is, and we can possibly come up with some ideas to help you.

Hi Sharon and welcome to the forum

Sorry to hear you’re feeling overwhelmed, being a working carer can be really demanding. I’m sure many people here will relate to that

There is a section in our help and advice pages about your rights in work and what support you can ask for, have a look:

https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/work-and-career

You could also have a look through the general support pages and check you’re getting all the support for your Mum you’re entitled to

Best wishes

Jane
