Carers allowance and permitted pension contributions

Hi

I am aware that Carers Allowance will offset 50% of my pension contributions from my self employed income. Does anyone know if they consider the net or gross contribution? I am finding the rules for different benefits confusing. For example child tax credits offset gross pension contributions completely from income.

Thanks very much for any guidance.
