You are duty-bound to care, apparently, so I have been told.
Love it !
There is nothing in Law to support this … assertion ?

Our local paper recently had an article that said relatives CAN be paid to care, and went into great detail. Unfortunately, I can’t copy it very well.
No problem there , BB.
Becoming employees as opposed to family carers.
That old DIRECT PAYMENTS thread goes into that scenario in great detail.
I read that a family member can be paid in exceptional circumstances…I.e. where there are language difficulties however the LA has to agree its necessary to meet their needs.
There is the sticking point.
They simply don’t agree even if there is no other viable option.
Hiya Cloudygirl, The truth of this is, social services don’t look into exceptional circumstances, they totally deny this exists. Ignoring a request for exceptional circumstances on the basis of they say …there is no such thing as exceptional circumstances OR for that matter being paid via direct payment if you live in the same household. I was told, they did do it once(and some still get paid) but they ‘closed the doors’ to accept any exceptional circumstances these days…Yes, it’s worded as being you can in the Care Act, but that has been overtaken by the coronavirus Act now. However, before the invention of the coronavirus Act, social care and health simply refused to allow exceptional circumstances, via using the ignoring method.
Charm
Agree, the ignoring method is very effective for them.
I requested this before Covid, and they ignored then, and I am sure they will continue to do so long after Covid has passed.
It really is a disgrace the way inpaid carers are treated.
The term exceptional ircmstances is not in the care act, but previous legislation. In any case I don’t live with my son, but they still won’t pay me. I know it’s odd to love a steam roller an traction engine, but M does. They won’t make any effort to find someone other than me to support him, if he wants to play with our engines he needs support from me. I started driving the roller when I was 19, we are well known in the steam world, I have had two national awards from the Traction Engine Trust, and was shipping steam engines round the world at 23!
Hiya Bowlingbun, Yes, sorry your right exceptional circumstance wording isn’t in the Care Act itself. There is also guidance to direct payments on here though.
https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/practical-support/getting-care-and-support/direct-payments#sec6
To be honest, Bowlingbun, they discriminate in not paying mothers…even when not living with the cared-for person. However, they allow direct payments to wage others. Then they expect free care…like we don’t need any income to live a decent life. Carers allowance hardly provides an adequate income.
I saw an ad by Hampshire County Council. Qualified social worker pay starts at about £32,000,plus perks!
Oh dear , our Irish cousins showing us the correct way forward … again ?
A LIVE support forum on Facebook :
The club will have guest healthcare professionals and experts providing online support, advice and guidance to family carers during the Covid-19 pandemic and we are inviting family carers to submit their questions for each expert over the coming weeks.
Weeks … and not days ???
Carers Radio have been a bit redundant as of late … last few years … since they last covered the Carers UK a.g.m ???
They are trying to get a session going with our current Care Services Minister , Clare Whately :
https://www.carersworldradio.com/
Joined up thinking … ?
Should we draw up a list to save our proposals being somewhat buried in this thread ?
All urgent like yesterday … now 4 weeks into the lockdown.
Anymore potential life threatening issues … beyond continuing to care no matter what ?
We are united when it comes to coronavirus … shame our supporting organisations are not … with us or themselves ?
Also posted on the main HOSPITAL DISCHARGES thread :
Any reader following the news today have probably already picked up this one among the numerous reports coming in from the care home sector.
An extract from just one report … hospital discharges into care / nursing homes :
__
New government guidelines say negative tests for coronavirus are not required prior to the admittance of a new patient.
Care homes could also be asked to take in people currently living in their own homes - without any kind of testing for coronavirus.__
Question ?Does this also include returning untested carees into our care on their discharge from an NHS hospital ???
And , if a care / nursing home refuses to take them in , no guesses as to who the NHS will turn to … " You have a moral obligation etc. etc. " … ?
One for Carers UK to clarify , urgently !!!
No doubt , Carers UK are aware of AGE UK’s response ?
Government must act now to avert disaster in our care homes | coronavirus | Age UK
Beyond having family members in these places , the now added bonus of hospital discharges … pass the parcel time , even a poisoned chalice … for far to many of us ?
Now that’s the type of response that we ought to be rushing to lend our support to! Applies to people of all ages!
Local authorities should be required to account for how government’s additional social care monies are used. No hiding any cash under mattresses allowed!
Without stating the bleeding obvious , a volcano is in course of erupting out there.
Numerous newspaper reports from all over the UK.
Advice as to which direction to take to avoid the lava flows will be greatly appreciated.
Industry leaders from Age UK, Marie Curie, Care England, Independent Age and the Alzheimer’s Society have written to Health Secretary Matt Hancock > demanding > a care package to support social care through the pandemic.
And … Carers UK’s " Demands " on behalf of 8.5 million family / kinship carers ?
For the past 50 years we’ve been driven by carers raising their voices together to call for change and seek recognition and support.
Liaising with us first would be appreciated … we know precisely what we need !
Go ahead Bill and state the obvious!
Just like that frog in a saucepan of gradually heating up water, we need the occasional reminder of just how hot it’s gotten!
The various problems as a direct result of the NHS and social care not being under one roof … not speaking to each other until now , when it is too late to implement any vital changes
to save the death toll being any higher than it currently is.
As we are seeing from report after report , the elderly are paying too higher a price as a direct result of a failed government policy … in fact , the highest price possible , their deaths.
Only in the past few days have the true facts emerged … in normal times , one might scream " Cover up ! " … as with other Government announcements when compared with actual
reality … ppe and testing kits being leading examples.
In our direct sphere … hospital discharges … spelt out in all it’s gory details earlier in this thread and even more so in the main HOSPITAL DISCHARGES one … worsening by the day.
Allied to that , CHC / needs assessment / carer assessments … all now virtually suspended u.f.n.
Support services … from qualified nursing duties down to the basic household cleaning … cut back and priced out of reach of least 4 million carers out there.
That number increasing rapidly as many carers who were juggling work with caring now out of work and / or furloughed.
How much more weight can we carry , individually as well as collectively ?
This might be the new norm for months , if not years , ahead.
All we have seen so far from Carers UK is a vague wish list … nothing therein delving down into the causes of the problems hitting each of us.
Even the recent questionnaire is so general as to be useless in identifying the priorities … which I sort to do a few threads ago :
Should we draw up a list to save our proposals being somewhat buried in this thread ?
- Hospital discharges and the interlinked care home crisis.
- CHC & NHS Continuing Healthcare effectively suspended for new applicants … more carers taking on qualified nursing duties.
- Needs & Carers assessments suspended … many will not even notice the difference ?
- Emergency cover … costs to replace us as the carer.
- Finances … it’s a feeding frenzy for the loan sharks out there.
- Carers card … a few decades too late but would assist many to break down the doors now slammed in their faces.
- Essentials deliveries … we are NOT automatically on any vulnerable list , many of our carees also do not automatically qualify either.
That list is by no means extensive … priority wise was the key … the rest long overdue but these " Magnificent Seven " deserve our full attention … more so anyone
else out there who takes an interest in our Plight.
In a nutshell , CarerLand is firing distress rockets and sending out s.o.s. messages … another SS Titanic debacle on the way … nobody responds until it’s too late ?
A glaring example for Carers UK to mull over … a real live hospital discharge conundrum :
https://www.carersuk.org/forum/44/discharge-after-coronavirus-advice-much-appreciated-40353
On the Covid report this afternoon, another problem was highlighted.
Patients were being discharged from hospitals to CARE homes, when they should be going to NURSING HOMES.
The main difference between the two is that nursing homes have to have a QUALIFIED NURSE on duty at all times, care homes don’t.
Care homes are simply not equipped to deal with patients with complex health needs.
I don’t think this issue can be buried any more, the Press really have got their teeth into the issue and won’t let go! Not before time?
Just a brief addendum on one of the " Magnificent Seven " … FINANCES :
Ministers urged to raise pay for care home staff during Covid-19 crisis
Government should fund £11.50 minimum wage for front line staff, says care home provider
Care workers / care workers / care workers … like a broken record.
What about OUR finances ?
Many claiming CA care for LESS THAN ONE TENTH of £ 11.50 per hour … and NO restrictions on hours spent caring.
For every £ 1 increase in CA , how much in the £ is deduced from other benefits ???
Only 1 in 10 / 11 can claim CA in the first place … ELIGIBILITY restrictions.
Silence … even Fairer for Carers would only add PENCE per hour to those fortunate enough to claim CA.
https://www.carersuk.org/forum/social-area/members-corner/fairer-for-carers-34307?hilit=fairer%20for%20carers
Carers of 1981 will still find that their level of CA bought more than CA + the Fairer increase would do in 2020 !
Silence … speaks volumes.
When are Carers UK going to push this subject.
I am NOT interested in carers who can “combine caring with work” they are the lucky ones.
Carers who CANNOT work are being totally left behind.
Why is caring 168 hours a week only worth £60 a week, especially as now all the services that were relied on to give them a much needed break have closed down with no alternative offered?
These carers need CARERS UK to stand up for them!
