Does anyone know of a way of moving somebody across the bed without having to physically lift them up and across? I am finding this so hard… I can put my mum’s feet in bed and get her line flat, but she’s too close to the edge. She has to be moved across the bed for safety sake. There must be a better way of doing it than putting my arms under her butt and lifting her entire weight up and across. She used to be able to bridge, which made it easier. But now she is unable to do it and I am really struggling helping her into bed. And by struggling I mean that it left me in tears after trying to budge her across for 20 inutes and still only managed 1 cm… If anybody has any advice, I would be very grateful!
Hi @Stupid_Little_Genius
There are gadgets to help with this e.g a slide sheet. However, it would worthwhile contacting your Mum’s OT or asking for a referral as they will be able to advise on the most suitable gadget and may well be able to provide one.
Are you doing everything for mum without help?
When did she last have a Needs Assessment from Social Services, and you, your Carers Assessment?
Have you ever heard of NHS Continuing Healthcare?
It’s free for those with very high care needs, but not easy to claim.
As others say, get advice from Occupational Therapy - but a slide sheet should work, she can lie on it and be pulled across, then it is removed.
Thanks so much for the advice! I appreciate it. The PD nurse referred us of OT before Christmas but we are still waiting… I have no idea how much longer it will take, but hopefully it will be soon then!
Awesome! I’ll keep waiting for OT, but I’ll look into a slide sheet too! Thank you!
Er… we’ve never had any of that? It’s just me, mum and my dad, who helps as much as he can but he’s well into his 70s himself. Thanks for the advice! I will look into it
Does mum receive any disability benefit in addition to her pension?
Is she totally immobile?
Does dad need any support?
(Short questions to determine if you are able to have extra financial help).
What I meant is that OT should advise you on a slide sheet and tell you how to use it, and probably give you one.
i use a slide sheet you can buy them from amazon, they are a circle of slidy fabric which you insert under the person to be moved. if your mum can roll over you can put the sheet under and then tilt her a little to get it right through. then you can pull the top of the fabric which will slide over the under part. you can also use this to tilt a person to avoid pressure sores or just for comfort. i am sure there must be demo on utube
hope this helps
