When is it right to claim Carers Allowance?

When’s it appropriate to claim Carers Allowance? I received a one-off council support payment this year. I am my husband’s carer 24 hrs, since his mobility affected by spinal op, four years ago, walks with difficulty but cant go out without help, no transport, so have amb. transport for appointments, I do all cooking, washing of him apart from face, I do toilet needs, and all paperwork. He also has Parkinsons. He is 80 I am 78.

I’m afraid you do not qualify for DWP Carers Allowance as you are a pensioner. However you are entitled to a Carers Assessment from Social Services looking at the support you need in your caring role and your husband should have a Needs Assessment. Are you claiming Attendance Allowance from DWP? If so he becomes EXEMPT from Council Tax.

Hello @Elisemig, It sounds as though you have a lot to cope with at the moment. Following on from these helpful suggestions, I’d also really recommend emailing advice@carersuk.org for information about what support you can apply for. Some advisers specialise in financial support and they are very helpful.
Best wishes,
Jane
