Not enough people know about power of attorney, but Carers UK wants to change that. That’s why the charity is running the first ever UK-wide Power of Attorney today Wednesday 22 April 2026, in partnership with Standard Life.
A power of attorney is a legal document that can ensure a person’s wishes are respected, should they be in a position where they are no longer able to express this directly. For carers, having power of attorney in place can provide clarity and avoid stressful decision-making during difficult emergency situations.
The Power of Attorney Day website and materials are designed to help people all year round. It has lots of useful information and resources to help you and your loved ones, such as:
-
A great FAQs section to help you understand what a power of attorney is, why it is important and how to go about putting one in place
-
A Conversation Starter guide to help you talk to loved ones about power of attorney - because we know it’s something people can be scared to talk about
-
Posters, social media graphics and a social media toolkit with suggested posts to help you and your organisation promote the campaign.
We will be running a Share and Learn session on Wednesday 22 April from 2-3 pm with Carers UK Helpline advisor Priya
This session will cover the following:
-
How to make an application and why this should be done
-
What happens if an application is not made
-
How to discuss this with family
-
What are the different types of POA
-
What is mental capacity
-
Financial support with fees
-
What to do if you have concerns about an attorney.
