Statutory Sick Pay in the UK stands at just £94.25 per week, covering an average of just 20% of workers’ income. Every other country in Europe other than Malta has a more generous system. In Bulgaria, Poland and Denmark, workers get 80% of their salary; in Germany, Croatia and the Netherlands, it’s 70%; and in all but four countries it’s more than 50%. It is not realistic to expect everyone to isolate if they literally cannot afford to do so.
