Family expect me to do it all

hello, Its been some time since I last posted. My uncle who i cared for sadly passed away last year. I now am a carer for my mum whose had another stroke, claim carers allowance which is why I’m writing this post.

Because I claim Carer’s Allowance my siblings think i have to do it all and be at with my mum for 35 hrs! They keep quoting the guidelines. I’ve tried explaining that its just a payment for caring. I work 35 hours a week plus the 35 hours a week i do caring whether that’s shopping, laundry, housework, topping up the meters etc.

Before this latest stroke mum was pretty much independent now she can’t walk. I have carers coming in 4 times a day.

I an exhausted and yet i get it from both barrels off of my family and quite frankly im fed up. Im also stroke survivor having had a stroke 9 months ago and im still relatively short into my recovery. Do my family care? NO.

What can i do? i am fed up of trying to explain it to them.

Miserable relatives! I had them too.
If they refuse to help they have lost their right to have ANY say in mum’s future.
Do you live with mum? Does she own or rent her house?
I suggest you plan a 2 week holiday, tell Social Services and family that you will not be available to care. Whilst you care they don’t have to and probably have non idea what it’s like.

Of course your other option would be to give up Carers allowance and let one of them apply for it and take over Mum’s care. Call m cynical if you like but I guarantee you won’t see them for dust as they race as far away as possible !

Relatives might not realise that “watching over” your parents and being on call in the same house, counts towards the 35 hours of caring too!

Just a word of caution, you say that you are claiming Carers Allowance AND working. Please read the regulations carefully as generally people in work can’t claim Carers Allowance!

@Imacarer1 bowling hun is right there is criteria to claiming carers allowance you could do with reading on www.gov.uk you cannot earn more than £204 a week after tax, national insurance and expenses. Have a nice day.
