Agreeing to a Financial Assessment

Does anyone know if I/my mum is obliged to agree to a Financial Assessment by Adult Social Care? Mum has a fairly large private pension and the proceeds of recently selling her house. She is self funding a Care Home placement and I can never see a situation where she will run below the savings limit and have to ask for Council funded support. Despite being assured of this, and being shown the evidence, her social worker says she still needs an FA. It seems to me to be a box ticking exercise. Can anyone advise me please?

@JayneyT i would ring the citizens advice bureau Jayne and speak to them. Me personally if your mum is self funding and paying for her own care I would have thought what your mum has is nothing to do with them until your mum got down to the limits and then would need help of them and then would need to fill in a FA. When you put I/my mum. Do you mean they are asking you to. What does the care act 2014 say about self funding.do not fill in any forms or sign any forms till you have spoken to the citizens advice bureau. I will look see what I can find to .

Very unusual. I’d tell the SW it’s none of her business if mum is self funding.
Do you have Power of Attorney?
Did mum choose to move, or was it after an illness?

@JayneyT the NHS website Paying for your own care (self funding). States you can choose to pay for care yourself if you don’t want a financial assessment.

Thanks BB @bowlingbun, I knew you would know. You have also lived through the last two years with me! Yes I do have Power of Attorney and mum is more than happy to leave her finances to me. If you recall, she was advised to go into care in December 2024 due to her medical conditions, but then has been “objecting” ever since.

@Teddybear thank you for researching that for me. I put I/mum because I have power of Attorney and although mum has mental capacity (apparently) she doesn’t understand finances and is happy to leave it all to me.

My mum was the same. I think it’s a generation thing. It was the role of the man of the house to deal with all the money matters. Trying to teach mum how to manage her finances after dad died was a lost cause. She was so relieved when I offered to take over for her. She told me all she wanted to know was whether or not she could afford to buy things from her JD Williams catalogue!
